Cake: The Final Frontier
When it comes to birthday cakes, few people ever found a slice they didn’t like, but even so, there is something extra special about a cake with a space theme.
The idea of getting into a rocket and flying into orbit is one that has excited generations all over the world ever since Yuri Gagarin became the first man to do it for real, and older generations will remember Neil Armstrong taking his “one small step” onto the moon.
Youngsters celebrating birthdays today could be part of a generation that won’t so much watch on in awe as astronauts reach for the stars as do it themselves. Right now, space tourism appears to be the preserve of the wealthy entrepreneurs and innovators like Richard Branson and Geoff Bezos, but in years to come it could be as common as flying long haul is to us now.
It may be that ordinary people will end up walking on the moon, or even Mars, especially if Elon Musk gets his way.
All this means you can bring lots of excitement with cake featuring rockets, astronauts and other planets.
It’s not just human exploration that you could include in it. Using modern space telescopes like Kepler and new techniques, astronomers have been discovering thousands of planets around other stars in our galaxy and even beyond. So far we have not yet discovered anything with aliens living on it, but such discoveries are bound to stir the imagination.
To that we can add the fact that space probes are still making amazing discoveries, from the Mars Lander exploring the red planet to Voyager 1 and 2, still sending back data even though they have left the solar system and are racing off into interstellar space.
We may not yet be at the point where we can fly around the universe at warp speed on spaceships like the Starship Enterprise, but we can “boldy go” and bake cakes that reflect the human imagination, the sense of wonder that comes with it, and the exciting possibilities that may lie ahead.
