What Is The World’s Most Expensive Cake?
Cakes are usually seen as a rather rich indulgence, but some opulent deserts take the biscuit.
Most cakes are an expression of love and joy from the baker who makes them, from the simple joy of a cupcake or Victoria sponge to a more elaborate custom cake delivery intended for a very special occasion.
In some cases, however, the richness of the buttercream, icing and marzipan is matched only by the sheer rich expense of the cake itself, with some of the most expensive cakes costing millions to make.
Here are some examples.
Pirate’s Fantasy (£26m)
Made by Sri Lankan celebrity chef Dimuthu Kumarasinghe to celebrate the launch of one of Aitken Spence Group’s luxury hotels, the ten-layered cake resembles a pirate ship, and as you might be able to guess, the reason for the expense comes in the form of its buried treasure.
The top layer features a treasure chest that contains rings, tie pins, necklaces, brooches and other fine pieces of jewellery, and precious stones adorn the top of the ship.
Inside there are ten layers with ten distinct flavours, including some rather unique flavours such as pumpkin, sweet wineberry and purple yam.
The National Gay Wedding Show Cake (£34m)
When Liverpool hosted the National Gay Wedding Show in 2013, they wanted to have an extra-special wedding cake, so whilst most wedding cakes have shimmering confections and metallic-looking edible decorations, this cake has 4000 diamonds.
Runway Cake (£55.6m)
Designed by fashion designer Debbie Wingham, the woman who made the most expensive black dress also designed the most expensive birthday cake that may ever be made.
Designed like a fashion catwalk show, the expense comes from the hundreds of diamonds used to line up and light up the cake, with over 435 white diamonds and 75 black diamonds being used.
According to the designer, the diamonds belonged to the family that commissioned the cake, based in the United Arab Emirates, and were part of a gift for their daughter’s birthday and engagement.
